CYTOGENETICS

Peripheral blood conventional karyotype

Collect 6cc blood from the patient using blood collection tubes containing dry heparin. The sample should be stored at 4οC and should be received by the laboratory within 24-48h from the time of collection. In any other case please contact the laboratory.

Please inform the laboratory regarding any medication the patient is receiving.

Amniotic fluid conventional karyotype

Collect 15-20 cc of amniotic fluid using a sterile Universal type tube. The sample should be stored at 4οC and should be received by the laboratory within 24-48h from the time of collection. In any other case please contact the laboratory. All samples for prenatal testing should always be sent together with a peripheral blood sample of the mother in a EDTA containing tube in order to check for maternal contamination of the sample.

Chorionic villi conventional karyotype

Collect Chorionic villi using a sterile Universal type tube containing specialized transport medium*.

*The transport medium is provided by our laboratory, please contact us for further information.

Product of conception conventional karyotype

Regarding the samples of spontaneous abortion during the first trimester, please use a sterile Universal type tube containing specialized transport medium*. The sample should be stored at 4οC and should be received by the laboratory within 24h from the time of collection. In any other case please contact the laboratory. A peripheral blood sample of the mother in a EDTA containing tube should always be sent together with the product of conception, in order to check for maternal contamination of the sample.

Regarding the samples of 2nd and 3rd trimester, a skin biopsy should be performed on the arm and/or thigh using a sterile scalpel and placed in a sterile Universal type tube. The sample should be stored at 4οC and should be received by the laboratory within 24h from the time of collection. In any other case please contact the laboratory.

*The transport medium is provided by our laboratory, please contact us for further information.

*The transport medium is provided by our laboratory, please contact us for further information.

Genetic testing

Use peripheral blood collection tubes containing EDTA. Store the sample at 4οC until shipment to the laboratory (<5 days).

MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY

Collect cervical/vaginal or endometrial smear in sterile 2ml collection tube (Eppendorf type) with transport medium, provided by our laboratory. The tubes containing the transport medium should be stored at room temperature and used until the given expiration date.

Collection instructions: Write the name of the patient on the collection tube. Collect the Cervical/Vaginal or endometrial smear and insert the part of the brush in the collection tube. Cut it using clean scissors and cap tightly. The sample should be stored at room temperature and should be received by the laboratory within 24-48h from the time of collection. In any other case please contact the laboratory.

Please note that:

  1. All samples should always be accompanied by the laboratory’s referral form and consent form containing all the requested information and signatures.
  2. All tubes containing biological samples should be tightly closed and packaged, in order to avoid contamination of the environment. The accompanying documents should not be in contact with the samples.
  3. All peripheral blood, amniotic fluid, chorionic villi and product of conception samples for cytogenetic analysis should be sent to the laboratory within 24-48h from the time of collection at room temperature. During summer months specimens sent by courier should be packaged with an ice pack (not in direct contact with the sample). In any other case please contact the laboratory for further instructions.
  4. In case of urgent samples contact our laboratory before shipping them.
