Chromosomal abnormalities are the most common causes of 1st trimester miscarriages. Conventional karyotype of the aborted tissue enables the detection of possible numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities of the aborted fetus.


Culture of tissue cells of the aborted fetus and chromosome study using G-banding technique. Subsequent detailed microscopic analysis and classification of chromosomes into pairs and groups allow us to detect possible numerical and structural abnormalities of sex and autosomal chromosomes.

In case of a normal female karyotype (46,XX), molecular testing is performed in order to exclude the possibility of maternal contamination, without additional cost.

Sample type: Tissue samples of the aborted fetus in sterile tube containing transfer medium (provided by the laboratory)

The department of Cytogenetics participates successfully to the external quality scheme organised by GenQA for Products of Conception Karyotype analysis.
