The simultaneous development of molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics during the last decade has drastically changed the way genetic diseases are diagnosed, prevented and treated.
It has also highlighted the necessity and importance of clinical genetics and genetic counseling, for the interpretation of the results of genetic tests and correlation to the clinical characteristics of the patients. The complexity of these results underlines the importance of a collaboration between specialized scientific personnel and the implementation of state of the art technical equipment and facilities.
The intensive research during the last years to decode the structure and function of the human genome, as well as the advance in analytical methods, have contributed to the better understanding and diagnosis of genetic conditions.
The development of Array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (Molecular Karyotype) has provided new opportunities to the fields of Prenatal Screening and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and has contributed significantly to the study of hereditary genetic disorders and cancer genetics.
The advent of massive parallel sequencing through Next Generation Sequencing technologies has greatly contributed to the implementation of higher quality diagnostic services. This technique, allowing the simultaneous screening of hundreds of genes, or even the entire human exome, has aided in elucidating the molecular basis of various genetic diseases and the correlation between genotype and phenotype, in many cases where other analytical techniques had failed.
Keeping in mind the above mentioned technological advances and the increasing need for reliable and up to date genetic diagnosis we founded a modern Genetic Laboratory.
Our aim is the broadest possible coverage of the increasing necessities for genetic testing, as well as provision or high quality clinical genetics and genetic counseling services.
Our personnel have large experience in the field of Medical Genetics, thus providing the highest credibility in the genetic analyses and clinical genetics services offered.
Furthermore, we always strive to participate in research and educational activities in collaboration with other institutions in Greece and abroad. In this context we participate in an e-learning program for Medical Genetics in collaboration with the Laboratory of Medical Genetics and Assisted Reproduction of the University of Ioannina. Genesis Genoma Lab undertakes part of the student’s practical training in laboratory techniques and genetic counseling and organizes seminars and conferences on the field of Medical Genetics.
