Chorionic villi karyotype

Chorionic villi karyotype can identify numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities, as well as rearrangements in all autosomal and sex chromosomes of the fetus during the 1st  trimester of pregnancy.

Indications for prenatal chromosomal testing are:

  • Advanced maternal age (>35 years)
  • Abnormal serum or ultrasound findings
  • Previous pregnancy with chromosomal abnormality
  • Parent carrying a balanced chromosomal translocation
  • Abnormal Non Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPT) result consistent with chromosomal aneuploidy

Method: Chorionic villi cell culture (G-banding).

Sample type: Chorionic villi in sterile tubes containing appropriate transport culture medium.

Time to result: 3 weeks
